Friday Feature: craftgossip.com

Hi everyone,

Today's feature is going to be brief as Feature Friday has turned into Flu Friday at our house :(

I wanted to share with you the website craftgossip.com...

I love CraftGossip.com
This is a site that has AMAZING ideas and links to tutorials for tons of crafts (sewing/knitting/glass/stamping/you name it!)... So, if you're crafty at all, you should definitely check it out... Also, if you like them on Facebook, they are running a contest right now - when they get to 10 000 fans, they will give away an Amazon Kindle 3G + Wireless, so if you like what you see, you might as well like them on FB too...

In the works...

A couple weeks ago, a friend of mine (who also happens to be my BIL's girlfriend!) was over and pulled out her laptop... I took one look at her sad, sad carrying case (sorry Chels!) and thought to myself 'I can totally make a new one for her birthday!'... Then she stopped in last week and said she had something to show me - it was a brand new laptop case (insert tears here)! When I told her that I had planned on making one, she said she would think of something else I can make a case for, and has now requested a custom Bible/Journal carrying case - super exciting and practical...

For now, I'm just in the planning stage, but here's what I have so far...
Our design (originally sketched on a napkin, which was likely thrown away in my efficient cleaning efforts ;) Please excuse my sad drawing skills):
Inspired by the sleeves they bought here:

Colca Sac

The outside fabric (100% cotton quilting weight - from my stash):

Tonic Living

The lining (plush white minky at $4.99 a yard - AWESOME deal!):

Wazoodle

And a cute pearl snap (like these) to hold stuff in the pen pouch on the front...

I'll keep you posted on how this pans out - and if you have suggestions, please let me know...
On a sidenote, I replaced my Valentine's Subway Art with this one (Be Thankful), and it is definitely serving as a great reminder (especially on days when I am spit up on all day long, my independent toddler spills milk all over the kitchen, and we have a leak in the middle of the JUST finished basement floor!)...

Friday Feature: Pillows

Like I mentioned in my first post, I plan to blog about some places that I have found inspiration for projects... In keeping with that, I am going to feature a website each Friday that I am inspired by, and if I have actually completed the project, I will share photos too!

This week, I thought I would start with pillows, since they are a great way to develop sewing skills if you're just starting out... There are TONS of ways to make pillows, from simple to extravagant, so here are a few good places to start...The most basic way to sew a pillow is to cut two identical squares, sew up three sides, fill with a pillow form or stuffing, and then sew up the forth side... The problem with this method is that you can't take the cover off, which is very helpful if you have kids, a spouse, a pet, or are generally clumsy like I am...

Instead, I have sewn a few throw cushions based on this tutorial - it shows how to create an envelope back that allows you to have a removable (and thus washable!) pillow cover without having to tackle things like velcro or zippers...

After I did this a couple of times, I wanted to try something a bit more complicated... So, I used this tutorial to create a box pleat for the chair in my daughter's room... It turned out alright, but I think it would sit nicer if the pillow wasn't so bulky (I made it by cutting an old bed pillow into a square - the rectangle that was left was used for the pink pillow above), and if I'd had the guts to try a zipper to hold the pillow in better... This was also my first attempt at piping, which I learned how to do here... It was pretty tricky - something I definitely need to work on :)

Then, we moved the old couch into the basement (finally finished - yay!), but it didn't have any throw cushions, so I took a (very) deep breath, and attempted zippers using this tutorial... I was really pleased with the result, and the nice part about zippers is that they don't use as much fabric as envelope backs, so you can use your extra fabric to make something else!

If you're looking to make some pillows yourself, here are some handy tips (for my area):
-Len's Mill is a great place to find things like fabric, zippers, piping, etc.
-you can buy pillow forms at WalMart, but you can also find them at Len's Mill (for a bit less $) - or, if you have extra bed pillows lying around, sew two parallel lines to divide it into a square and a small rectangle, and then cut to get two pillow forms!
-if you want to order fabric online, two small Ontario businesses that I've bought from are: Tonic Living and Pink Panda Fabric (gotta love supporting local!)

All keyed up...

Not long ago, my keychain broke, and I found some very beautiful fabric ones online... I was going to order one, but then I decided to try making one myself...

The nice thing about these keychains is that they are:
a) big enough to slip over your wrist, which is great for moms-on-the-go, loading and unloading kids and groceries from the car
b) big enough to find in a large purse, gym bag, etc.
c) pretty inexpensive (they make a great gift!), and
d) much prettier than the ones I had in the past :)

So, here are a few pictures of keychains I have made for family/friends... As you can see in the bottom picture, I also made some smaller ones (6 inches instead of 10), which are still big enough to find in a bag and you can slip them over a finger or two...

My first sale - 6 inch keychain

Last week, I actually sold two keychains (yay!), and I have a stash of supplies just waiting for me to make more... I'm not quite ready to do anything official yet (like setting up an etsy shop), but if you need a new keychain and like what you see, let me know and I'll do my best to get some made in the next little while ($7.50 for large and $5.00 for small)...

The Stash - including 50 yards of pink cotton webbing!

A birthday surprise...

Tonight I got to go out with some amazing ladies from work to celebrate Fran's birthday... It is SO wonderful to spend time with all adults every once in a while - we definitely spent the whole night laughing!

Inspired by the Valentine Subway Art from yesterday's post, I decided to try my own... Since Fran is a fellow computers instructor, I knew that she would appreciate the effort... I started with her name (and favourite colour), and then surrounded it with words that I feel describe her... I know that people usually design these in Photoshop, but being a Microsoft Office Master (seriously, that's my title from Microsoft!), I used MS Word instead...

Here's how it turned out:

I will likely try this again, but I think programs like Photoshop probably have a better selection of interesting fonts to choose from...

A little love...

Valentine's Day is next week, and although I don't really believe the hype, it is a great excuse to decorate using pink and red...

At M4M (Moments for Moms) last week, they made this adorable heart wreath, but I wasn't able to make it that day!! Luckily, my wonderfully crafty MIL had some supplies left over, and I was able to make one for myself... It was very simple - just a matter of tying scraps of fabric and ribbon onto a wire... Once it was complete, I had to convince Mark to put a nail in the door (yes, the one he JUST refinished in the fall after I, in a pregnancy-induced moment of frustration, had my FIL help tear off the screen door while Mark was out for the evening, resulting in a BIG unplanned project - oops!!)... It's a good thing he loves me so much!

In any case, I think it turned out nice enough to be the (self-proclaimed) cutest door on the street ;)

Then, yesterday I found a post for a free Valentine Subway Art printable (here), and I thought one more touch of pink would be nice... I just printed it on photo paper and put it in a frame I already had... Apparently, this Subway Art is all the rage right now - might have to give it a shot myself... I'll let you know how it goes :)

A place to share...

Ok, so I've decided to jump on the blogging bandwagon...

Basically, the goal is to share my crafting adventures - partially because I am crafting as much as I can (with two kids!) and am really enjoying it, and partially because Mark is never really all that excited when I say "look what I made today"... To be fair, most of the things I make are pink and/or flowery and/or of no use to him, so I totally get it, and thus I am hoping to provide a little extra inspiration to all of my creative friends...

The plan is to fill you in on the projects I am working on, have completed in the past couple years, and hope to complete in the future, as well as show you some of the amazing places where I find my inspiration...

Thanks for joining me on this adventure!
Lynley

PS umi designs (pronounced "you-me") is the name I would ideally like to use for a company one day... I am inspired by projects that are unique, modern, and innovative, and I hope that my projects are too :)
